Green House Gas Inventory
The green house gas inventory is part of Kumtor’s sustainability report and it contributes to the development of a GHG reduction strategy.
We calculated the Scope 1 (direct) and Scope 2 (indirect) GHG emissions to be 368,264 and 26,995 tons of CO2 equivalent for 2012. The former is derived mainly from Kumtor’s fuel consumption (76%) followed by use of explosives (17%). Kyrgyzstan’s use of hydro-power for electricity generation explains Kumtor’s relatively low Scope 2 emissions. This also means that even significant reduction of electricity consumption would not result in a material reduction of Kumtor’s carbon footprint.
